CREATING MEMORIES

This t-shirt quilt was made by Jan Walz for her Grandson Gabe's graduation
and features t-shirts from his high school wrestling career.

Thank you for the warm welcome you have given me as the new owner of The Cutting Edge Quilt Shop! I appreciate your patience as I work on learning many new names. I really love getting to know you and hearing about, even seeing, the projects you are working on. One thing has really stood out to me . . . these projects are about creating meaningful memories. A quilt for a new baby that is expected, a wedding quilt, athletic shirts made into a quilt for a graduate, a memory quilt in honor of someone who has died, and honor quilts for veterans, to name a few. You are creating memories stitched with love!

GRAND OPENING

Hundreds of people came to help us celebrate our grand opening on April 23 and 24, including Rush City Mayor Dan Dalberg, pictured here with our crew. Forty people were winners of great prizes donated by our vendors. The information gathered on the slips for the drawing will help us as we plan for future classes.

WHAT'S SUE BEEN UP TO?

Classes are a great way to try something new! I took two over the past couple of months; the Crossroads Quilt-As-You-Go table runner (picture) and the Bindle Bags. It is really fun to resurrect sewing skills that have been dormant for a while. I have even made some samples that are on display. Thank you to a great team of staff who patiently answer my questions. I really enjoy watching their creativity and their patient interactions with customers. Both are what sets this shop apart. My favorite new tricks are using gray thread (thank you, Mary!) and using my seam ripper to hold the fabric as it gets close to the presser foot.

RYAN'S CASE FOR SMILES

Pillowcase project – Pat Bjorke of Columbus (pictured above) and her friend Lois Markie of White Bear, and others sew pillowcases for hospitalized children. It's just one more way to create meaning with your sewing. The Cutting Edge Quilt Shop is a drop-off site for this program. For more information on Ryan's Cases, go to https://caseforsmiles.org.

??? MYSTERY FABRIC CONTEST

Make sure you stop in and see all of the amazing entries from our Mystery Fabric Sewing Contest. Thirteen people entered the contest. Each received one yard of the same mystery fabric sealed in a paper bag. They had one month to create something and return it sealed under wrap. There were two categories: quilt and non-quilt. The distinguished judges were Virginia Thorn, former owner of the shop; Sharon Gusk, a shop employee; and Jackie Northrup, a former employee. The identity of the participants was unknown to the judges. Entrees were judged on construction, creative use of fabric, and amount of the mystery fabric used. Participants could add any supplies needed to the one yard they received, but the projects had to include the mystery fabric.

The judges had a tough job as each of the participants did an amazing job! The first prize in the quilt category was awarded to Anna Sorgert and second place to Dee Johnson. First place in the non-quilt category went to Wendy Redland and second place to Carrie Kirchberg. All entries will be on display at the shop through May. Please stop in and see them!

So many new things in the store this month: A Country Weekend fabric line by Lisa Audit for Wilmington Prints, Kim Diehl’s Gratitude & Grace and her Simple Whatnots Collection #10, baby Minky, a great selection of flannels, and queen size fusible batting, to name a few.

THE SEWING ROOM

The Sewing Room is a comfortable space that can be reserved for mini-day retreats. Bring your UFOs or shop our great selection of fabric, kits, patterns, and notions. Your group will enjoy a 10% discount on regular-priced items on retreat day.

Bring your own sewing machine, cutting mat, rotary cutter, and sewing supplies. You are welcome to bring your own lunch and snacks. A small refrigerator is available and complimentary coffee is provided.

Payment of $20.00 is required in advance to reserve the space and is non-refundable. Rental includes the use of tables and chairs, outlets, iron, and ironing board.

Staff will need to access the office and storage area through this space periodically throughout the day.

Monday - Friday 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Saturday 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
